Avoid dying young: causes and self protection

It hurts so much to see young people pass away when they had so much life ahead of them. Every day, we hear about teenagers, students, and young adults dying from things that could have been prevented. Accidents, untreated health issues, depression, drug abuse, and risky lifestyles are some of the hidden killers shortening lives too soon.

With better care, we can live a long and happy life.

But here’s the truth: many of these deaths don’t have to happen. With the right information and choices, young people can live longer, healthier, and happier lives. Let us open your eyes to the main reasons why people die young and more importantly, to help you protect yourself.

1. Toxic relationships

Being in a relationship where you're always sad, scared, or controlled is dangerous. Emotional and physical abuse can damage your health and self-esteem. Some even lose their lives to abusive partners.

You should know that love should never hurt. If someone disrespects or controls you, that’s not love.

2. Poor mental health and depression

Depression damages a lot in the human brain

Many young people go through emotional pain, but they stay silent, thinking no one will understand. Depression, anxiety, and loneliness can become heavy to carry, and if ignored, they may lead someone into dangerous thoughts, like self-harm or suicide. Sometimes, the happiest-looking person is actually the one suffering most inside.

Don’t keep everything in. Talk to someone you trust a friend, teacher, or counselor. There is no shame in seeking help.

3. Reckless behaviors and accidents

Speeding, drunk driving, not wearing helmets or seatbelts, and careless sex are leading causes of death in youth. Many lives are lost due to decisions made in just a few seconds for a little pleasure. Triggered by amusing themselves, young people end up catching diseases and even becoming accident victims.

Respect safety rules because they exist to protect you. Use protection in all areas, whether it’s driving, walking at night, or relationships.

4. Drug and alcohol abuse

Young people often try drugs or alcohol out of curiosity, peer pressure, or to forget their problems. But it doesn’t take long before they become addicted. Many die from overdose, accidents, or liver failure. It also destroys dreams, relationships, and self-worth.

Protect yourself: Avoid environments that encourage substance use. Choose friends who inspire you, not those who pull you down.

5. Violence and crime

Some young people join gangs or get involved in street fights to feel powerful or gain respect. But this often leads to injuries, jail, or even death. Others become victims by simply being in the wrong place.

Avoid people who love trouble. Stay focused on building your future, not destroying it. Real strength is in walking away from danger, not walking into it.

6. Untreated illness

Ignoring small health problems can lead to big consequences. Some young people die from things that could have been treated if caught early, like infections, diabetes, or even cancer.

Don’t ignore signs your body gives you. If you feel pain, weakness, or any strange change, go to the clinic. Taking care of your health now can save your life later. For instance, a friend died of the cancer whose signs had been seen 12 years ago. He could have been saved if the signs weren't ignored.

7. Poor diet and lifestyle

Eating too much junk food, sleeping too little, and avoiding exercise weakens your body and makes you more likely to get sick. Diseases like obesity, high blood pressure, and heart problems now affect young people too.

Eat fruits and vegetables, stay active, and drink water. Sleep at least 7–8 hours. These small choices can make a big difference in your future.

Our life is a precious gift that we only have once. There's no second chance to get it back once it's lost. Every young person deserves a chance to live it fully and happily. Eventhough the reasons why some people die young may seem many and scary, and most people believe death is our fate, but with care, awareness, and the right choices, you can protect yourself and build a bright future. Take small steps every day to care for your body, mind, and heart. It will help you forever.
